Emerson College Students Participate in Emerson Stage's I Love XXX
Emerson College students participated in Emerson Stage's production of I Love XXX from February 5-8 at the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre in Boston, MA. Written by Meng Jinghui, Shi Hang, Wang Xiaoli, and Huang Jingang, and directed by Tushar Mathew and Alison Qu, with translation by Claire Conceison. The play examines and questions the role of individual to the collective in post-socialist society and China's effort to resolve its past and look to the future. The work has no cast or characters, and every iteration is a unique improvisation based on the phrase "I Love" by its collective ensemble.

The musical featured an all-Black cast, which was very important to co-executive producers Jasmine Hawkins '23 and McKennen Campbell '23. Written by George C. Wolfe in 1991, Jelly's Last Jam follows the story of jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton. The performace begins with a recently deceased Jelly Roll who is conjured by a mysterious being named "Chimney Man" to relive his life. The story shares the joy, celebration, and contributions Black people have given to art.
