Emerson Speech and Debate Team Advances to Finals in Seoul, South Korea

The Emerson Speech and Debate team made history at this year's finals in Seoul, South Korea. Three students advanced to the finals this year after a season of rigorous debate: Stella Del Tergo ('25), Kayla Armbruster ('25), and Olivia DeCesare ('26). Emerson is one of four institutions worldwide that reached the speech and debate finals. They were led by Deion Hawkins, Assistant Professor of Argumentation & Advocacy and the Director of Emerson's Debate Team.

The annual Emerson Experience in Entrepreneurship (E3) program pitch competition was on Friday, April 22. There was a group of fifteen students who pitched startup business ventures, and 5 winners.

Trevor McLean Wins Annual International Public Relations Competition for GlobCom

Trevor McLean '22 was on the winning team of this year's GlobCom, an annual international public relations competition held June 2-5 that asks students to work together with peers around the world to solve a PR problem. This year's client was The Daily Mile, an initiative that aims to promote physical, mental, social, and emotional wellbeing in children through jogging. McLean's team's "Run to the Rainbow" campaign was selected by a panel of judges as the most effective and creative.

Emerson poetry team takes home first place in national competition

Four Emerson students participated in, and took home a $1,200 first place cash prize from the 2019 VOX Pop Slam Poetry Tournament at Stark Brewing Company in New Hampshire this October. The competition is regarded on a national level, and is judged through both scale ratings and audience reaction. The team included Dessaline Etienne, Jane Cardona, Kayla LaRosa, and Lauren Licona, who all used personal stories, vulnerability, and creative expression to bring them to victory.

Emerson College Student Wins Jess Ilias Clavelli Comedy Award

Emerson College junior, Tova Tencer, was recently awarded the college's Jess Ilias Clavelli Comedy Award. With a cash prize of $1400, the award recognizes Tencer's merits as a comic performer and artist and is named for Jess Ilias Clavelli, the 6 year-old son of alum Christopher Clavelli ('83), who died suddenly in February of 2003.

Emerson College freshman and member of the school's Forensics team, Karthik Ramaswami, recently emerged as the national champion of the Duo Interpretation debate at the Pi Kappa Delta national International Public Debate Association tournament at Hofstra University.

Emerson College Student Remains Undefeated at National Student Debate Tournament

Emerson College freshman and member of the school's Forensics team, William Rowley, recently emerged as the national champion of the Novice competition at the Pi Kappa Delta national International Public Debate Association tournament at Hofstra University. Along with his teammate, Rowley was also crowned the national champion in the Duo Interpretation debate.

Emerson College freshman, Sara Hathaway, was recently crowned Regional Champion in the International Public Debate Association Regional (IPDA) debate after attending with the school's Forensics Team.

Emerson College student, James Manley of Cypress, Texas, was honored with the 2017-18 Queer Foundation Publication Award for Young Scholars, and was one of six students nation-wide awarded with scholarship support for their essay submission.
